One hundred years ago, the world witnessed the beginning of a new international initiative for
peace. On 25 April 1920, in San Remo, Italy, the Principal Allied Powers agreed to set aside
their colonial aspirations in the Middle East, to nurture new sovereign states. Among those
whose territorial claims were recognised were the Jewish people, granted a homeland again
under international law, after eighteen centuries of exile.
This educational guide assembles historians, international lawyers and other public figures
to explain the significance and subsequent impact of the San Remo Resolution over the past
century. Its principles and legal status are shown to be still valid for the peace process today,
with regard to the ‘two-state solution’, the ‘settlements’, and the question of Jerusalem. For
all who want to be better informed about the historical and legal foundations of the Middle
East, we commend the San Remo model as a reliable and promising pathway for peace.
“Any negotiation toward the establishment of peace and the protection of
minority communities within the land should be based on this premise.”
